City worker arrested

By George P. Hassett

A Department of Public Works employee was arrested today after a high speed chase through the city.

Richard Nurse, first came to the attention of police when he was allegedly speeding down Wilton Street. Police said he turned onto Vernon Street and accelerated at a rate of 60 mph.

With police in pursuit, an arm reached out the passenger side of the vehicle and made a throwing motion with an unknown item reaching parked cars on the side of the street, police said.

Police spokesperson Capt. Paul Upton said the vehicle stopped for police and then sped away as the officer approached the car. Eventually, police said Nurse did stop but had to be physically removed from the car. He was arrested for failure to stop for police. A police search of the area in which the object was thrown found nothing.

A source inside the Department of Public Works said Nurse was a meter reader for the city and was on the clock at the time of the incident.
