Swim team also wins

With 28 points and an astounding 19 rebounds, senior forward John Lubin led the host Somerville boys’ basketball team to a convincing 73-56 win over non-league foe Newton South last week, as the Highlanders improved to 2-0 on the campaign.

Somerville, which plays in the Greater Boston League, pulled away in the second half, after leading, 31-26, at the break.

In addition to Lubin’s spectacular outing, the Highlanders got huge contributions from Gustavo DeMoura, Roubins Guerrier, Rayoni Matos, and Richard Guerrier.

DeMoura , a senior guard, totaled 13 points, while Roubins Guerrier scored all of his 13 marks in the second half.

Matos poured in eight points, and Richard Guerrier had five, but proved even more impressive on defense with seven steals.

“Our defense caused a lot of turnovers,” Somerville head coach Mark Antonelli said. “It was a good effort, but we still need to clean things up. [We also had] a lot of turnovers.”

Meanwhile, in the season opener at Peabody, Lubin (18 points), DeMoura  (14), and Matos (10) all hit in double figures, while Richard Guerrier almost reached the mark with eight to go along with another seven swipes, as the Highlanders held off the Tanners, 60-49, in nonleague play.

Somerville had led by even more than the final 11-point margin, but the Tanners rallied to make it a closer game.

“We hung on for a hard fought victory,” Antonelli said.

Cam Rumrill, Ajay Tulachen, Harrison Grams, Marissa Rafal, and Rafael Lima all won their respective events to help lead the Somerville swim team to an 80-71 win over Medford last week. Seniors Rumrill, Tulachen, and Grams took the 200 freestyle, the 50 free, and the 100 backstroke, respectively. Sophomore Marissa Rafal placed first in the 500 free, and fellow sophomore Rafael Lima won the individual medley.
