While patrolling the Davis Square area last Wednesday, police officers took note of a man they recognized as having outstanding warrants entering the Tedeschi Food Store on College Ave.

The officers stood outside the store waiting for the man, David Seibel, 28, of Whitman, to exit. They watched through the window as Seibel purchased a pack of cigarettes and then turned towards an aisle in the store where he reportedly picked up two packages of candy.

The officers reported that Seibel waited in line for a few moments, but then returned to the candy section and pretended to put the items back while actually placing them in his jacket.

Seibel then reportedly left the store without paying for the merchandise and was stopped by the officers waiting outside and told that he was being detained for shoplifting.

When asked for his I.D. he told police that his name was David Marckini and that he did not have identification on him, police said. Asked a second time, Seibel once again gave officers the same false name, according to reports.

A woman, Karly Trainor, 28, approached the officers and told them she was the man’s girlfriend and reportedly told one of the officers that his name was David Seibel.

The alleged shoplifter then asked why the police always have to harass him and that he did not steal anything, police said. Meanwhile, police dispatch radioed that Seibel did indeed have an active arrest warrant for him.

As officers attempted to handcuff Seibel, he reportedly struggled violently and resisted arrest, eventually breaking free and attempting to flee the area. He was soon captured and taken to the ground but continued to resist being handcuffed, according to reports.

Trainor reportedly involved herself in the melee and scratched one of the officers in the ensuing struggle. She was eventually brought under control, police said, and detained while the other officers attempted to subdue her boyfriend.

After police administered a burst of pepper spray Seibel reportedly submitted to being handcuffed.

Seibel was placed under arrest for assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, and shoplifting by concealing merchandise, and for warrant charges of destruction of property under $250, assault and battery, and conspiracy to violate drug law.

Trainor was placed under arrest and charged with assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest.
