Girls Volleyball: Lady Anchors return to State Tournament

For the second year in a row, after years of disappointing seasons, the St. Clement Girls Volleyball Team secured a spot in the State Tournament.

The Lady Anchors finished the season with a 16-4 record earning them the 5th seed and a first round bye beating St Mary’s of Lynn 3-2.

Senior co-captain Allison Caloggero (Medford) had 18 service points and 6 aces. Co-captain Kristina Ofoedu (Methuen) assisted with 9 kills and 2 blocks and Co-captain Judy D’Haiti (Cambridge) pitched in with 17 service points.

“This group of girls is lead by four strong seniors who will be missed next year,” stressed Head Coach Lisa Regione. “We improved our record from last year and we continue to look strong every day.  I am confident heading into the state tournament that we will remain focused and play to our strengths.”

The team will play Snowden High School this week.

Football: St. Clement shuts down Matignon 27-14

On Friday night, November 2, the St. Clement Anchormen and Matignon Warriors battled at their annual grudge match. Before Friday no team had won by more than a touchdown in over five years.

The anticipated Quarterback match-up between Matignon senior captain Ron Slager and St. Clement senior captain Jamie Thompson (Somerville), who transferred to St. Clement from Matignon last season did not disappoint the packed house at Dilboy Stadium.

Slager, who rushed for a TD, threw for a TD, and rushed for a 2-point conversion was equally matched by Thompson who also rushed for a TD, threw for a TD, and completed a 2-point conversion pass to give the fans a thrill. The difference maker on offense proved to be St. Clement senior running back Jesus Gambaro (Charlestown), who returned after a 4 week shoulder injury to rush for 149 yards on 16 carries and a TD. “When Jesus is carrying the ball he really gives us control of the pace of the game” said assistant coach George Murray.

On the defense it was St. Clement junior Linebacker Casey Baptiste (Medford) who recorded 11 tackles, 2 tackles for a loss, while adding 2 knockdowns, 3 hurry-ups, and 2 sacks on Slager to keep the Warriors at bay.

Matignon senior Tight End caught a TD for the Warriors while St. Clement Junior wide receiver Junior Oyaronbi (Revere) was a recipient of a 58 yard strike from Thompson, and Senior Half Back Alberto Lopez (Chelsea) added a 11 yard rushing TD for the Anchormen to round out the scoring.

The win evens the Anchormen’s record to 4-4. St. Clement will travel to Framingham State to play the Marian Mustangs next Saturday, November 10 at 4:00 p.m. They will then travel to Victory Field in Watertown Thanksgiving morning to face St. Josephs Prep.
