Newstalk for March 21

Ward 7 Alderman Bob Trane seemed a little upset about a comment made by Marty Martinez in our paper last week, saying that there were streets not plowed in Ward 7. Guess Marty must be stuck in his Winter Hill home during the snow, because we know for a fact that Alderman Trane takes this part of his job particularly seriously. He was responding to calls from constituents all weekend and helping them get out from underneath the snow with a little help from DPW Commissioner Stan Koty (more on that later). Now maybe Marty should think twice or maybe come out of his house during the next storm and see for himself, we hear Bob will show him personally.

Now speaking of the snow storm Friday, was that Commissioner Stan Koty himself on the two way radio complimenting certain employees that were doing a great job plowing the streets and then there was that one employee he wasn’t exactly happy with, at least over the air he wasn’t. Several listeners were a little shocked to hear his comment. Some of us here at News Talk aren’t, we know Stanley expects a job well done by everyone, and he’s not afraid to speak his mind. Personally we think Stan and the DPWdid a great job collectively all over the city and some of us were out in it so we know.

The campaign for the special election Alderman at Large is heating up, and all three candidates are working hard, we‚Äôre going to do our part on trying to get voters out on April 10, if you haven‚Äôt registered you have until 8 p.m. today (the 21st) at City Hall to do it. Marty has resorted to an early endorsement from state Rep. Denise Provost in a recent mailing to voters.  We‚Äôre not sure how affective that can be this early unless he‚Äôs going to roll out all the other ‚Äúprogressives‚Äù in the next few weeks. We know Jack has been door to door in Winter Hill and East Somerville even during the recent snow. Newcomer Bob Daut is seen as well around the city, and hopefully will do well for his first time on the political circuit.

A rumor going around the city is that Alderman At Large Dennis Sullivan is moonlighting as a hair color tester for a local manufacturer.  We hear Dennis is testing out and demonstrating one of their new products. Hair Dye! We sort of guessed that wasn‚Äôt Dennis‚Äôs real hair color! Only his hairdresser knows for sure!

Still persisting is the rumor that Alderman at Large Bill White just may jump into the mayor‚Äôs race along with Tony LaFuente.  We hear Bill is being persuaded by various people and organizations to take the leap. He hasn‚Äôt made a decision and probably won‚Äôt until after the budget hearings, which might prove to be very interesting.

Speaking of candidates in the local wards, again we keep hearing that in Ward 6 Rebekah Gewirtz is going to have an opponent.  Also, in Ward 5 Sean O‚ÄôDonovan is likely to face Joe Lynch, a popular Magoun Square activist, and maybe even another candidate as well. Attorney Steven Glines is inching closer and closer to making the run in Ward 4 against Walter Pero.

This Past Sunday was the 5Km Ras na hEireann Road Race. The annual race began with its starting line close to three thousand runners, ending right in Davis Square. Rasna hEireann is the most genuine Irish race this side of the Atlantic. It is a celebration of traditions dating back centuries and locally, a celebration of spring in Somerville.  Well, actually spring with snow and ice on the ground from the Saint Patrick‚Äôs Day Blizzard! We heard that our friend Chris ‚ÄúTiger‚Äù Stockbridge AKA Stocky was one of the frontrunners.
