The Somerville Chamber of Commerce monthly “Business After Hours” meeting is Thursday, October 4, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. This month it’s at the Foundry at 255 Elm Street, Davis Square. Somerville Oktoberfest at Redbones in Davis Square is Sunday, October 7, from noon to 6:00 p.m., with an outdoor beer garden on Chester Street. Oomph band, bratwursts, potato pancakes and much more. Free admission. It should be a lot of fun. This is the fourth annual Somerville Oktoberfest, all started by the Chamber Dining and Nightlife Group.

Tonight, Wednesday, October 3, Artisan’s Asylum at 10 Tyler Street is having lessons in special effects makeup which will include prosthetics, scars and monster makeup with the goal of turning every student into a zombie. Sounds like a lot of fun, and it starts at 7:00 p.m. tonight.

The HONK! Festival is a revolutionary activist street band spectacle that will converge for the seventh time in Davis Square, this week from Friday, October 5-8. Bands from all over the world are inspired to travel great distances to joyously celebrate, reclaim public space, protest violence and oppression, and enliven and embolden their audience.

Our condolences to the family of Doris M. Walsh who recently passed away. Doris was a lifelong resident of the city and had many friends and relatives. She was 90 years old. Our sympathy to her family. Also, Our sympathy to the family of Richard G. Dangora Jr. who passed away recently following a lengthy illness, our condolences to his wife Katherine whom they both were married for 37 years, Richard will be missed by his many family members and friends here and elsewhere around the ‘Ville.

Recently retired principal of the Winter Hill School, Steve Tuccelli, was a teacher and Principal at the school for 30 years. He was very popular with students, teachers and parents here in the community. We all wish him the very best in his retirement.

CAAS Annual Meeting and Celebration will be Tuesday, October 23, at 6:00 p.m. over at the Somerville City Club (across from Holiday Inn). It’s a great get together and an opportunity to find out what this wonderful agency, now over 30 years old here in Somerville, has to offer the community.

It will be a very special election and it would be nice to see a huge turnout this coming November 6. But you can only vote if you are registered, and the deadline is October 17. Call or visit City Hall (617-625-6600). Go to the election department, it takes only a few minutes. To those that wish to have an absentee ballot because of illness or out of the city on November 6 you can find out how you can vote as an absentee as well. Again, it would be nice to see a large turnout. We are very fortunate that we can pick our government officials. The entire election department staff is ready and eager to help anyone out with registration or questions, and besides, they have some nice candy to pick through while being waited on. Although the ladies up at the Water Department have a nice selection of candy, you can’t register to vote there. We thought we would mention their candy!
