We hear that the kickoff party for Joe Lynch, candidate for Ward 5 Alderman, last Saturday night on Richardson Street, was a huge success. Hundreds of Ward 5 voters, well-wishers and family members were treated to an old-fashioned outdoor campaign rally. Technology was also front and center with the launch of Joe’s website with wireless laptops on hand for making campaign contributions, a professional cameraman and even a few camera phones snapping away. Seems as though two guys (some say they were DPW workers) were concerned that they were not invited and from outside the fence used their camera phones to snap pictures of the event. Well technology works both ways, because the campaign’s cameraman swung into action and captured the two guys on film. We hear that footage is soon to appear on Joe’s website at www.lynchforalderman.com Рcheck it out.

The primary is coming up soon Рon the 25th of September Рbut for only two races here in the city Рthe Mayors race and in Ward 6 the Alderman’s race. We know that Joe is going to win huge throughout the city – it’s anyone’s guess as to who will nominate with him.

Mayor Curtatone and Mayor Antonio Raiomondi of Gaeta Italy met this past week to begin plans for several programs, which will begin next year, to strengthen the Sister City bond between Gaeta and Somerville. Mayor Raimondi coincidentally enough was also born here in Somerville, and lived on Somerville Avenue for the early part of his childhood. Maybe living here in Somerville helped gave him the incentive for running for public office, who knows…

This past weekend some of you possibly noticed a huge block party under the McGrath / O’Brien overpass! It was actually officially called “Sculptures Under McGrath” by Project SUM and local artists that was mostly privately funded by local businesses. There was plenty of food, music and dancing with plenty of Art Sculptures spread along beneath the specious underpass.

Seems the present Alderperson from Ward 6 had a neighborhood meeting last week at Ciampa Manor regarding the four-year plus development on Summer Street by Dakota Development Рwho recently beat back a court order attempt by one of the neighbors. This should be interesting – the neighbors don’t want the project, the elected officials don’t want the project, the city doesn’t appear to want the project and to top it off – nobody can seem to locate a copy of the original plans that were approved by the Planning Board several years ago. How convenient for the developer, who has problems not following their own approved plans on a project they did on Osgood Street and now seems to be trying to be pulling the same kind of stuff at their new building on Broadway in Teele Square. Candidate for Ward 6 Alderman Charles Chisholm had a good idea about urging the City of Somerville to take the land by eminent domain and build a nice park there – maybe this developer will just go away and stop causing problems in this city.
