The East Somerville Community School suffered extensive damage from a fire this morning at 4:40 a.m. and will be closed to students and teachers for at least a week.
Deputy Fire Chief James Hodnett said arson investigators and Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone are on the scene now to determine what caused the fire and what to do next.
The fire started on the school’s first floor and did most of its damage on the Glean and Pearl Street sides, he said. Classrooms 106 through 110 and 206 through 210 on the floor above suffered the most damage, he said.
It is still unclear how the fire started.
"That school will not be open soon. There is just too much damage," he said.
The fire that hit the school was the second major fire in the city in four days. On Thursday, police officers Alex Capobianco and Derrick Dottin carried two people out of a burning home at 9-11 Harvard Place.
