Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone has requested the Board of Aldermen declare three city-owned Curtatoneheadshot150_2 properties in Davis Square surplus in order to move ahead with plans to develop a hotel and public parking garage on one or more of the parcels.

“Declaring these lots surplus is the first step in bringing a much needed hotel to the thriving Davis Square business district,” he said. “This area is not only a local draw but has become a regional dining and shopping destination. There’s ample demand to support the right kind of specialty hotel in this area.”

The three parcels to be declared surplus are the Buena Vista Garage at 56A Holland Street, the Day Street Parking Lot and the Grove Street Parking Lot. These parcels are currently used as a combination of metered, business permit and Zipcar parking spaces. Curtatone said any proposed development must, at a minimum, replace the existing parking and provide additional parking for the hotel in accordance with the zoning code.

“Any party interested in developing these parcels must understand that while this is a busy commercial district, it directly abuts residential neighborhoods. We recognize that parking in Davis Square is a challenge and are committed to working with the eventual developer to provide as much additional parking for the neighborhood as possible,” he said.

The proposal to develop a hotel in Davis Square resulted from a study conducted in 2006 by Pinnacle Advisory Group evaluating the feasibility of a new hotel in Somerville. The study identified Davis Square as a choice site.

The Board of Aldermen is expected to act on Curtatone’s request to declare the parcels surplus land in January.
