The Somerville News Person of the Week, Bert Gay

Meet Bert Gay, husband of Dorothy Kelly Gay, a nice guy who has had some health setbacks of late, but he doesn’t show it. He was recently diagnosed with lung cancer and had a long stay at Mt. Auburn Hospital. The bad news, according to Bert, was a setback. But he’s turning that around and making positive strides to get better and enjoy a long life with his wife Dorothy. Born in England about 70 years ago, he later met Dot his wife-to-be as she served as a nurse in England. They both immigrated here to Somerville in 1968.

Together they both got involved in local politics shortly thereafter. Bert, is a nice guy, with a great smile and all his friends will tell you he’s very loyal to his family and friends in that order. He’s got strong opinions and we know when his mind is set on something he moves ahead with it. He makes the grey clouds overhead seem light blue, taking bad things and turning them into something positive. We choose Bert Gay because now that he’s out of the political circuit he’s a different person and actually has a side to him that a lot of people don’t see. Some of us went on a trip to Ireland with Bert and Dorothy and he was like a kid in a candy store, going all over Ireland, visiting sites a little off track, but knew exactly how to make it so everyone had a great time. He is seen often at the Independent with his wife Dorothy and a few friends. Say “Hi” to him. You’ll be glad you did. We here wish him nothing but the best for himself, Dorothy and family. They are a very nice couple.
