On Sunday, May 6, former mayor and present Register of Deeds held his 28th Scholarship Breakfast at Anthony’s in Malden with approximately 300 friends in attendance. Brune had as is guest speakers Secretary of State William Galvin, who has attended the Brune breakfast for the last 15 years, and Middlesex County Sheriff Peter J Koutoujian.
Brune presented his $1000 scholarship to Nathaniel Dempkowski, the son of Robert and Carol Dempkowski of Somerville. Nathaniel is graduating eigth in his class of 327 with a 4.35 grade point average. Nathaniel has already been accepted to Northeastern University Scholars Program as well as Worcester Polytech. He is waiting to hear from Tufts and Cornell as well as other schools before he makes his choice.
The Brune breakfast is always enjoyed by those who attend and this year was no exception. Gene’s good friend Jimmy Del Ponte was the Master of Ceremonies and he had the crowd laughing with his jokes and songs about Gene.
Secretary William Galvin and Sheriff Koutoujian had some very kind words to say about Brune in reference to his career in politics as well as Brune as a person. He has donated more than $30,000 dollars to Somerville High School students to help with their education.
Brune will not be running for re-election after serving as the Register of Deeds for the past 24 years. Before that he served as the Somerville mayor for ten years, as well as an Alderman for six years and the Somerville Board of Health for three years.
