What’s going on at the Board of Alderman? We hear a certain committee chairman is busy yelling and screaming at department heads. One alderman has only been in attendance three times out of eight meetings since January. Another alderman used his Section 15 “no more discussion rule” on a mayoral request. So everything is normal, or is it?

Wow! We were on Winter Hill where the new “bike corrals” is installed and the businesses are upset. One person reported to us that since the rack has been installed no bikes were using it. It means loss of revenue from the meters, not to mention loss of revenue to the businesses. Is this an attack on local businesses by city government? This is the question asked by a lot of small business owners. Maybe these racks would be good for Davis and Union Squares – we’re not sure – but in Ball Square in front of a bar and in Winter Hill in front of a pizza place? How many bicyclists are parking to go in the bar and how many are ordering and taking out pizza on a bike? The person behind this must never have worked in the business world and if the Board of Alderman approved this then why?

Big time Happy Birthdays to some of our fans here in the ‘Ville, like Alderman Jack Connolly who celebrated this past Sunday. Lifelong resident and good guy Mike Nionakis, who ran for Alderman himself this past year, celebrates this week too. Also, to Julie Brady. Although not officially a resident of the ‘Ville, she’s an avid reader of our paper and lives over in Medford. Chip Koty is celebrating his birthday as well, and we hear he’s also engaged. Happy Birthday to our good friend Ray Snow Jr. of Somerville Plumbing who is also partying his way around the ‘Ville this week. And finally to Kenny Web, Gale Snow, and Mary Jane Gambale who are all celebrating this week as well.

A big get well soon to Mary Carafotes who suffered a fall recently and is in the MGH. She’s in bad shape and will undergo surgery for a broken back. Prayers and good thoughts are with her and her family for a road back to recovery.

Also a get well goes out to Yolanda DiGirolamo who has been laid up recently in the hospital. Yolanda is a wonderful lady as well as the mother of Somerville’s own Attorney Rich DiGirolamo. We wish her all the best and a speedy recovery as well.

Did anyone else notice that a local attorney Evan Gaff was on Jeopardy last week? Although he didn’t win it was nice to see another Somerville resident make the TV screen, even if it’s for a one time show.

Happy third wedding anniversary to our good friends at Somerville Fire Department, District Chief Dennis and his lovely wife former Somerville Fighter Cindy Snow Murphy. Let the partying begin! Also, happy anniversary to our own Billy and Marisa Tauro, who are celebrating here in the ‘Ville as well. Billy and Marisa make a great couple, and share lots of laughs and fun. We wish them many more years of happiness and bliss.

Don’t forget to mark your calendar for a week from this Sunday, May 6, over at Anthony’s in Malden. The annual Gene Brune scholarship breakfast is a great time. There will be lots of people and it’s always nice to see Gene. This is his last year as Registrar of Deeds. It’s hard to believe he’s given over 20 years of service in Middlesex County.
