Newstalk – March 21

On March 21, 2012, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

A very special Happy Birthday to our good friend Danny Spinosa who lives between FLA and here in the ‘Ville on Winter Hill. Danny’s a nice happy-go-lucky guy, and why not? He has great and loyal family and friends over the years. He’s 90 years old, and a former WWII veteran. In his day he was a very political behind the scenes guy for many aldermen and mayors here. We wish him the best and can’t wait till his 100th.

A celebration of 30 years since Victor and Rosa opened Victor’s Deli and it’s still here in the city with a long tradition of the best deli and food around. The place is packed every afternoon for lunch, and for a while now their daughter Nancy has kept it opened for the dinner crowd. If you haven’t been to Victors for lunch you’ve missed not only the best food, but the smiles that you get from everyone there – it’s hard to beat.

We were sad to hear a prominent lady passed away two weeks ago, Mildred “Millie” Fleming, who was an extremely popular lady at the COA’s here in the ‘Ville. She was the devoted mother of Jerry Fleming, who was always there for her. Millie was just short of her 100th birthday. We were saddened to hear this news too late to pay our respects. She will be missed by not only her immediate family but by all her friends here in the ‘Ville.

Another  popular, prominent, and well liked lady here in the ‘Ville passed away this past weekend as well. We send our condolences to Helen Foster’s family here in the ‘Ville, she was a nice lady and many family and friends will miss her. She was the mother of well known Herb Foster, Jr. and Marlene Bouchard of FLA.

There was a great turnout for Alderman Sean O’Donovan’s “St. Patrick’s Day Party” here in the ‘Ville last Friday night up at the Armory. Lots of Irish and Irish-for-the-day were on hand to listen to some great music. Lots of people from around the city were present including former State Representative Marie E. Howe. She’s a great lady and loyal ‘Villen here, and loves our city. She started this tradition back in the early 70’s. Since she has retired (still very young) from the legislature she has managed to travel all over the world. She has been on many continents as well as the South Pole. Maybe that’s her trick in looking and acting so young all the time! She’s a great lady and good friend here to many.

Lots of Happy Birthdays this week, a special week in March: The best city Auditor you can have and a true ‘Villen, the great Ed Bean. No one does figures like Ed. At work and on the campaign trail he’s the best. Sort of a true bean counter in a good way. Jody Connelly, who has moved to the great city of Brockton, but her heart and friends are still here in the ‘Ville, we say Happy Birthday to her and many more in spite of being with Phips. And how can we forget Michael Sullivan of the Famous Berkeley Street Sullivans. A dedicated state employee and great ‘Villen himself. From the same neighborhood, we wish the very best to Rachael Hart-Adams of the Hart family. Hard to believe she is married now. We remember her when she was an infant. Happy Birthday Rachael. Also recently celebrating her birthday is Shelia Hickey-Santangelo. You can see her picture on The News site from the party Friday night, and she’s always got a happy face even though she’s married to Frankie. We would be remiss if we didn’t say Happy Birthday to our own Cathleen Twardzik-Powers, a recent newly married herself and long time writer for the news. Also, big Happy birthdays to Patricia McGovern, Bill Grenier, and Madelene Fortier.

Congratulations to Tom Champion of City Hall who recently was named “Gold’s Gym – Silver Award” member of the Year. He, in his spare time (hard to believe he has spare time), started to work out and lost over 50lbs. He looks great and reminds more than a few of us that we should find out how.
