Boys track
On Sunday afternoon, Feb. 19, Andre Rolim captured the MIAA D1 championship in the 600 meter run for the 3rd consecutive year.
By design, it was his first 600m race since early January at the Dartmouth relays – he has run many other distances, longer and shorter – giving him a chance to peak in the next couple of weeks.
His smooth but fast pace (1:21.04) was achieved in a solo effort as no runners made an effort to stay with him after lap one of the three-lap race.
Rolim appears capable of besting the All-State meet record (1:20.89) next Sunday at about 2 p.m. at the Reggie Lewis Track.
Also on Sunday Lyndon Kaba continued his recent success (GBL championship) with the second best time in the preliminary morning round (6.67) qualifying him for the Final in the late afternoon.
He overcame a tough start to win a sixth place medal (3 points) in the Final and qualified to run the All-State meet next Sunday.
Marcelo Brociner completed a great rookie campaign with a 1:27 effort in the 600m race, which is good for 13th place and third best Sophomore time in all 4 divisions.
Also qualifying and competing at the D1 meet were- the 4 x 200 meter relay squad of Ryan Baugh 25.1, Calvin Vo 25.9, Jerry Nazaire 24.8 and Lyndon Kaba 23.8 (1:39.0), as well as the 4 x 400m relay team of Brian Martinez (55.3), Kevin Ma (55.5), Marcelo Brociner (55.5) and Andre Rolim (49.7/ 3:36). The 4 x 400m team placed 14th in the 36 team field.
Look out next year for this strong group (4×4), who should all be back and ready to move up (3.1 seconds away from a medal position).
The MIAA All-State Championship meet (1:00pm Sunday at Reggie Lewis Track on the campus of Roxbury CC) is a good take for Somerville fans with Nicole Genard (55m Hurdles and LJ) and the girl’s 4 x 200m relay vying for championship medals along with Andre and Lyndon.
