The View From Prospect Hill – February 15

On February 15, 2012, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

We love our pets almost as much as we do our own children. Some of us maybe just as much or, sadly, more so. In our eyes they can seldom do wrong and they are always cute and lovable. Aren’t they?

Unfortunately, even the most responsible of pet owners can sometimes turn a blind eye to what may be offensive or downright threatening behavior to those outside the “family.” However thoroughly one may convince oneself that Rover or Fifi is “OK” and will never bite or misbehave, it is cold comfort to the passing stranger who has no idea what may transpire in that tense moment when confronted by the unknown.

The impending crackdown on dog owners who disregard the long established leash laws is being lauded by many who have experienced just such angst and dread while walking or biking through our public parks and byways.

It is difficult to argue against this action as the law is the law. We hope that the general public will benefit from this and that the quality of life in Somerville will be raised a bit higher as a result.

A bike path is hardly a suitable place to be walking dogs, generally, let alone in an unleashed state. Likewise, everyone has a right to feel as safe as possible wherever they may roam.

If one chooses to be a pet owner then one also has a responsibility to society and to the pet itself to do it correctly. Let us expect no less.
