Bet made, debt paid… hard…

Fulfilling his end of the bet with Somerville, New Jersey Mayor Brian Gallager, Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone wore a New York Giants jersey at a recent Board of Aldermen meeting on February 9. Curtatone, a longtime football enthusiast working in the Somerville Public School athletic department as a volunteer assistant football coach, wore number 88, that of receiver Hakeem Nicks. Nicks was the leading receiver for quarterback Eli Manning in Super Bowl XLVI with 10 receptions for 109 yards receiving in the 21-17 heartbreaker loss for the New England Patriots.
While city spokeswoman Jackie Rossetti claimed the bet was a well-intentioned gesture aimed at bringing the two Somervilles closer, many in Somerville would most likely find it difficult. The reason would be that it might be very hard for the majority of Somervilliens to find any common ground with a population that supports the Giants, who defeated their beloved Patriots and their future Hall-of-Fame quarterback Tom Brady in two straight Super Bowls. The first, Super Bowl XLII, ended Brady and the Patriots hopes of a perfect season, searing the unfortunate memory in the minds and hearts of all those in Somerville.
