Prescription Drug Discount Card, available at all City buildings, offers average savings of 25%; Launched in October 2009, Somerville was first City in MA to office the program.

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and Somerville Health Department Director Paulette Renault-Caragianes announced that after two years of partnering with the National League of Cities on its Prescription Drug Discount program, Somerville residents and employees have realized more than $12,000 in savings, 25% savings since the program’s launch in October 2009.  The program is designed to help residents seeking relief from the high cost of prescription drugs.  The City of Somerville was the first Massachusetts municipality to offer the program through the NLC, and after seeing more than $5,000 savings in year one, costs have continued to decrease for program participants.

“We are so pleased to see the positive impact that this program has already made for Somerville residents, and we want to see the usage and savings continue to climb as we move forward,” said Renault-Caragianes.  “The NLC has helped us create additional ways to help residents save money and offer significant public health benefits, and we’re grateful for their leadership and support.”
NLC discount cards are available at all municipal buildings, local businesses, and by visiting www.caremark.com/nlc, and may be used by any resident of Somerville – there are no restrictions based on age, income level or existing health coverage. Cards can be used when purchasing prescription drugs at many area pharmacies as well as more than 59,000 participating retail pharmacies across the country.  Participating pharmacies in or near Somerville include Ciampa Apothecary, CVS, Inman Pharmacy, Rite Aid, Skenderian Apothecary, Stop&Shop, Target, and Walgreens.  The discount card program is administered by CVS Caremark.
