The St Clement Anchormen, improve their Catholic Central League (CCL) record to 2-1 with a stunning 63- 52 win over Maimonides Academy on Sunday, January 8. The Anchormen were led by freshman Emaru Pena and junior Kevin Foley (Medford). Head Coach Leo Boucher enters his 10th year at the helm.

Pena led the team with 21 point and 6 assists. Junior Kevin Foley nearly captured a triple double with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists. Junior John Posada (Charlestown) and Jesus Gambaro (Charlestown) both provided solid defense.

The team looks to improving its CCL league record to this week as they face CCL rivals Cristo Rey of Boston and Pope John of Everett.

Girls Basketball

St Clement Girls basketball team won their first game with a convincing win over Cristo Rey 51-10 on Saturday, January 7.

St. Clement Lady Anchors came out with great defensive intensity holding Cristo Rey to just 2 points in the first quarter. Katie Monestime (Somerville) and Jess Popken (Medford) led the way with 14 and 13 points respectively.

Elva Martinez (Somerville) was great defensively and came up with numerous steals. It was a tremendous overall effort from the Lady Anchors with 9 players scoring. St. Clement looks for win number two at home on Monday at 5:15 versus Mount Saint Joseph Academy and then plays Pope John of Everett on Friday.

With the win, the Lady Anchors are now 1-3 in the Catholic Central League (CCL) and are off to a slow start after capturing the CCL title last year. The team lost 3 of their 5 starters, including the 2011 CCL MVP Christy November, who left a large gap to fill.

The team also was plagued by an ACL injury to Beatrice Boisvert (Everett) who would have provided some experience as she was the only returning post player. The team looks to regain its footing in the CCL starting two freshmen and an eighth grader under head coach Alyssa Jann a native of Westford, MA. Jann played Division 1 basketball for Quinnipiac University where she was the senior captain and starting shooting guard.

She was named the 2011 Female Student Athlete of the Year for Quinnipiac while graduating 3rd in her class earning a Pre- Med and Marketing degree. She returns to Massachusetts after a stellar high school career at Westford Academy where she scored over 1500 points and was named Player of the Year in 2006 and 2007 from multiple publications. Under her direction, the young team looks forward to developing their skills, confidence and improving their record. “With such a young and inexperienced team, this December was a big learning month for us.

Just understanding the basics while gaining some confidence in ourselves, I have already seen such a big difference in each of their games. The good thing about a young team is how much they will continue to develop. It is a great group of girls and we are going to start seeing their hard work pay off in January!”
