Newstalk for September 10

Well Senator Pat Jehlen has proven again that the PDSers don’t care about anyone other than themselves. Seems she co-sponsored, along with Rep. Donato of Medford, a resolution to have DCR rename Sandy Beach in Winchester the Senator Charles E. Shannon Beach, but then did nothing further on it. Can you imagine what a slap in the face Queen Pat’s neglect is to all the friends and supporters of Senator Shannon? If Charlie was alive and in the position to honor a deceased friend (and Charlie was truly a friend to all), he would have taken control of the dedication, got the word out to the public about the event and made sure the sign stayed covered until the official unveiling. But not Queen Pat. She’s more interested in doing a nature walk with her friends at the Middlesex Fells Reservation that day. We here at Newstalk and at The News liked and supported Sen. Shannon for all his good work in the community. Shame on Senator Jehlen and her lack of respect for a good man’s memory. We hope that a large crowd of Charlie’s friends show up and remember him this Saturday at 10 am at the Upper Mystic Lake. And we hope they remember the Queen’s disgraceful actions the next election day.

Primary Election Day is this coming Tuesday, expect a huge crowd of out of towners and special interest groups to be pushing those stickers in your face. Just so you know, there is a 150 foot rule on election day, no candidate or worker for a candidate can stand inside 150 feet of the polls. Let’s see how closely that rule is followed.

Well another real estate office closes its doors here in Somerville – Remax Specialists came to Somerville 2 years ago and has now officially closed down. The owners returned to their roots: working for a Malden Century 21 company. Another office, Good Neighbors real estate, also closed down and there is still a rumor that another company will surprise their agents and give them one day notice before closing the doors permanently here in Somerville.

Sources tell us that the special project on Park Street that the Demo Man is involved in got quite a bit of opposition at the neighborhood meeting. It seems that neighbors are against the project overwhelmingly and the developers will likely seek fewer units — but not too much less, we hear.

Stickers Carl raised over $91K for his campaign, of which 70 percent came from special interest groups and outside the district donors. Plus there are the free mailings he‚Äôs getting from special interest groups. This Tuesday is Primary Day and this is going to be an interesting election. Recently Stickers Carl put out a plea for 300 volunteers on his Facebook account.  The Progressives like to talk about political hacks and machine politics; this is a prime example of him and his cronies using special interest money to buy their way into office. If that‚Äôs not the definition of a hack, we don‚Äôt know what is.

The Ward 1 City Democratic Committee recently met and endorsed all the candidates on the BALLOT for the Democratic nominations including Bob Trane.

Sources tell us that Ed Nuzzo, a special projects manager for the city, is doing well after being swept out to sea last week after jumping off a vessel owned by a Somerville building inspector in Boston Harbor. Mr. Nuzzo was overcome by a strong current and washed up on the rocks by George’s Island about 150 yards away. He was a little cut up and disoriented but came out ok. He later decided to re-jump into the ocean again and swim back out to the vessel that he had originally jumped off of in the first place. What some people will do to show off in front of a crowd, huh?

Last Friday afternoon, Somerville Police in marked cruisers staged themselves outside of the AJ Wright parking lot after receiving a call of a shoplifting crime in progress.  The police officers patiently waited outside of the store for a signal and then moved in.  Store security and police placed the culprit in custody. Another job well done by the local force.

The Mayor’s pick of two deputy police chiefs could take place as soon as this coming week. We wonder who will it be? There are three very qualified serious contenders to choose from, making it a difficult choice. We wish them all the best of luck.

Happy Birthday to Phillip “Phippy” Jefferies who has a party coming up, we heard it was supposed to be a surprise party but he found out. Anyway it should still be a good time, it’s this coming Saturday night at the VFW Hall on Mystic Avenue in Medford starting at 7 p.m.

We were all sad to hear that popular Davis Square fixture and nice all around guy Joe Errico Sr. passed away recently. He was 102 years old, a nice man and ran a good business. A lot of us here in Somerville – new comers and old timers – all know how nice he was, always a smiling face in Davis Square.
