This year’s ‚ÄúWhat the Fluff‚Äù — the Union Square celebration of that sticky marshmallow goo – will be expanded and bigger than ever. But Union Square Main Streets, the festival’s producer, still needs volunteers to help make the festival’s quirky ideas a reality, says Mimi Graney of Main Streets.

This year’s festival on Sept. 27 features much fun with fluff: there will be Fluff Fear Factor, Fluff Bowling, and a Fluff election. But with all the games, Graney says ‚ÄúWhat the Fluff‚Äù needs volunteers to help run the show. ‚ÄúFluff‚Äù organizers will host a special volunteer party before the event.. But volunteers may get stuck in a sticky situation: Graney says at least 3,000 ounces of marshmallow fluff will be used this year as part of the celebration for one of the festival’s most beloved characters, Fluff Boy.

Fluff Boy goes back to the beginning of “What the Fluff” when young Michael Legere showed up smeared in fluff. His aunt, Laurinda Bedingfield, superimposed pictures of Legere, as Fluff Boy, flying through Somerville skies and over local landmarks.

Graney says the 32-page full scale comic book tells the story of Fluff Boy, a sweet youth from Union Square, who is transformed into a Fluff-filled super hero and, through various struggles, comes to terms with his new sticky super powers. Local graphic artists George Pfromm III, Liz Prince, Joe Quinones, and Maris Wicks tell the story with original words and pictures.
