Democrat won’t rule it out

By George P. Hassett

The US Congressman who once represented Ward 5 on the city's Board of Aldermen has not ruled out a run for US Senate.

Rep.
Michael E. Capuano, D-Somerville, told PolitickerMa.com last week that
he wouldn't shut the door on a Senate run if John Kerry leaves to
become a member of President-elect Barack Obama's cabinet.

"Who
in their right mind would ever close the door on anything," Capuano
said to PolitickerMa.com. "Anybody that tells you they have closed the
door is either lying to you or lying to themselves. At the same time,
that's not the same thing as saying I've got it all planned out,
because anybody that's done that is crazy too. The answer is somewhere
in the middle."

Capuano, a congressman since 1999, is a
life-long Somerville resident. He was first elected to office in the
city in 1977 as Ward 5 alderman. He left the Board of Alderman in 1979
for an unsuccessful run for mayor. He returned to the board in 1986 as
an alderman-at-large and served until 1989, when he was elected mayor.

According to campaign finance records, Capuano has more than $920,000 in his campaign account.
