A Somerville Police officer assigned to a speeding enforcement detail stopped an alleged speeder last week and was given what turned out to be a false name, according to the officer’s report.

The offending driver, Matthew Dailey, 34, of Swansea, reportedly gave the officer the name of his brother instead of his own, police said.

When the officer returned to his cruiser and ran the info that Dailey had given him through the Registry, the corresponding picture did not match the person that had been stopped, as stated in the officer’s report.

The officer reportedly gave Dailey numerous chances to give his true identity, but he continued to insist that he was someone else.  It was not until the officer placed Dailey under arrest that he was finally able to identify him as Matthew Dailey, by a piece of paper in his vehicle, according to reports.

Once Dailey’s proper identity was confirmed, the officer determined that the man’s driver’s license was under suspension for a payment default.

Dailey was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, giving a false name, and speeding.
