Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone, Commissioner Richard Sullivan of the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), and Ward 7 Alderman Bob Trane announced that the City of Somerville has reached a three-year agreement with DCR allowing the City to handle maintenance and day-to-day operations for the entire Dilboy complex, which includes a recently renovated stadium, swimming pool, auxiliary and little league fields, two tennis courts, a basketball court, a tot lot, and two parking lots. The City had already assumed operating responsibility for the stadium in 2006, and had taken over management and maintenance of the pool earlier this year. The City and DCR have similar agreements for snow removal operations along Shore Drive and for maintenance and operation of Veteran’s Memorial Skating Rink on Somerville Avenue.
“This latest in a series of agreements with the DCR is another very positive step in providing and sustaining additional recreation programming in the City of Somerville,” Mayor Curtatone said. “It will also allow us to ensure, at the local level, adequate safety and maintenance for all of these facilities. I want to commend Commissioner Sullivan on his continued leadership over the last several years, and thank him for the close collaboration DCR has given us in our efforts to help local residents make the most of these vitally important recreation resources.”
“We’ve already improved the open and park space at Hodgkins Park, and we are currently working on upgrading North Street Playground,” said Alderman Trane. “Now this new opportunity for Dilboy will help the City further improve the quality of life in our Ward. With a steady push from the City, Dilboy’s come a long way in the past few years – and I plan to continue the effort to ensure that the facilities there realize their full potential as a shared community resource.”
Effective immediately, the City will assume maintenance operations of the complex and sustained recreational programming at the stadium, pool, fields and courts.
