State legislators are taking bold, and decidedly controversial steps in making the prospect of casino gambling in Massachusetts a reality. Many important factors have been examined and analyzed, and it looks like a solid majority of lawmakers and their constituents now stand in favor of the proposed measure.
Those who support the proposal have pointed out that nearly $500 million in annual tax revenue is likely to be generated, along with the $270 million in one-time licensing fees that would be a part of the plan. Additionally, something on the order of 15,000 new jobs are likely to be created in the process, which provides a huge incentive for adoption of the plan, considering how badly such jobs are needed in these times.
Nay-sayers have their concerns and some of their arguments can hold water, but overall, in weighing both the pros and cons, it is obvious that the benefits to the citizens of our state far surpass the possible drawbacks.
The people need those jobs and state officials can no longer look them in the eye and present an acceptable excuse for denying them, nor for rejecting the massive revenue boost that will be a part of this package.
