The Somerville High School Freshman Girl’s Volleyball team had a big win on Monday, September 19, vs. Cambridge in three sets.

The Lady Highlanders lost the first set with a score of 22-25. “They were flat after the weekend. They just weren’t moving in that first set and their serves were off,” said Coach Invernizzi.

Somerville rebounded in the second set, coming back from a six point deficit to take the set 25-19. Alba Haxhimali had a string of six service points and Midardley Joseph had five service points. “Freshman volleyball is about the serves.  If you get it over the net, then you make the other team have to return it.  Serving is a big part of the game at this level.”

The Highlanders took the third set with a score of 25-21 in a come from behind victory.  The girls were down 15-11, but came back with serves from Haxhimali, Cassandra Paiva, and Midardley Joseph. Nichole Lewis, Nitacha Lewis, Cheyenna Grant-Johnson, and Brenda Bedaro all combined for great defense. Deidre Matthews, Jennifer Leone, and Biance Desert also contributed to the win.

The Freshman Highlanders have a 2-1 record with wins against Haverhill and Cambridge.
