State paints 9,000 linear feet of street and improves signage as part of pedestrian safety project.

In an effort to make it easier to step out all across Somerville, MassDot crews have undertaken a $15,000 project to paint more than 9,000 linear feet of local roads and have added new pedestrian signage at various locations in the city. The new street markings involved pedestrian crosswalks and stop lines for vehicular traffic.

MassDOT focused on Somerville’s busiest roadways, including Broadway, Pearl St., Medford St., Somerville Ave., Beacon St., Elm St. and College Ave.

“It doesn’t matter where you go in Somerville, our community is teeming with foot traffic,” said Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone. “Well marked intersections make it easier for foot traffic and vehicle traffic to coexist. It’s especially important to provide added safety for children and the elderly.”

New signage has been added to various Somerville intersections, most notably along Broadway and Elm St.

“The state has really helped us out here,” Curtatone said. “This is $15,000 we absolutely would have had to spend in local money if MassDOT had not come in to do this work. It frees up more of our funds to improve handicapped access, mark bike lanes and clearly delineate our school zones.”
