So, we’re as happy as all that, are we? That’s awfully good to hear. What with the economy still in the tank, jobs as scarce as ever, and uncertainty looming eternal, it’s comforting to note how stalwart and confident we can be in the face of it all.
The “Happiness Survey” reminds us that it is to our advantage to count our blessings at the end of the day. Our society has made it through tough times before, and we should always be thankful for the good things that still remain to be enjoyed.
There was a day when pundits and politicians fussed over the “Misery Index” – a concept that may be deemed too distasteful in these leaner times. As if one more ounce of misery could permanently rupture our shared sense of stability as a nation. Instead, we look on the brighter side, seeking hope and direction. As well we should.
The fundamental alternative to optimism is pessimism, and that is not so attractive or useful. We have the ability to pull ourselves up, to find the answers, and to put ourselves back into the game. If we exercise the will to do so and make the right decisions, that is.
Ultimately, our leaders will point the way – in at least two different directions – and we will follow willingly as usual.
In the meantime, keep smiling.
