Somerville triumphed in game one of the Yawkey League’s 2011 championship finals Monday evening in a 7-3 victory over the Malden Bulldogs. The game began with a leadoff single from Mike Maguire. He stole second base right away and didn’t have to wait too long before Ted Dzuiba hit a stand up double to left field, bringing in Maguire and putting one on the scoreboard for the Alibrandis early in the bottom of the first inning. Andrew Babb and Matt Deeb both hit back-to-back singles and the bases were loaded for Marc DesRoches. Moments later DesRoches hammered the ball into left center clearing the basses and breaking the game wide open. “It was just a fastball upstairs and I ended up catching up to it,” DesRoches admitted. Pitcher, Sean Sullivan was in the catbird seat with a 4-0 lead on the bulldogs.

In the bottom of the 4th inning Chad Conner hit a zinger into the outfield. Maguire then hit a line drive RBI single, bringing in Conner to make it 5-0. Maguire stole second and third but was left stranded at the end of the inning.

In the top of the 5th Malden answered back with three runs. They threatened to do more damage against the Alibrandis but the pitching arm of Sean Sullivan and the unstoppable defense behind him led Alibrandis to turn a double play and to get out of the inning. “They just played great defense behind me. I can feel confident trying to pitch to contact and giving them the ball in play, cause they’re gonna make the plays behind me,” Sullivan said.

In the bottom of the 5th Andrew Babb hit his third single of the game. He stole second and then went onto third on a ground out. A wild pitch to the next batter allowed Babb to score making it 6-3. “Winning the first game was great for us. Hopefully we can keep the momentum going, swinging the bats, and on the mound just pounding the zone, playing base to base and keeping them on their toes,” Babb said.

In the bottom of the 6th Maguire got to first on a line drive. He proceeded to steal second and third base as usual and was able to score on David Scioli’s RBI single to make it a final score of 7-3.
