The View From Prospect Hill – August 10

What was that rushing by so quickly? Yet another announcement of delay in a major development project for our community?

We share the frustration felt by our friends and neighbors in Medford and Arlington as we here in the ‘Ville stand scratching our heads, wondering what it is we can believe when presented with court mandated schedules and the associated promises of fulfillment by officials that accompany them. We are left with the unsettling realization that no such commitments are sacrosanct, that no contract is unbreakable.

Many area residents are deeply invested in the prospect of the GLX and what its completion will mean to them. While some are against it entirely and others are lukewarm on the issue, the fact remains that important plans and expectations are made based upon the projected time line, and that schedule seems to keep moving forward uncontrollably.

We understand that funding is the main issue here, the old bottom line. We are also told that acquiring land and nailing down the location of a maintenance facility is an important factor in pushing back the completion date. We wonder, though, why these issues have so suddenly come to the fore, as if no one in the loop could have foreseen how they could impact the timely completion of this project, until now.

Anything can be delayed to death. Given enough time plans can be changed, commitments dissolved, contracts broken.

Like passengers standing, waiting for a train, we earnestly hope that the posted schedule can be believed. The trains will always run on time if they are allowed to keep changing the schedule. Let us hope that we are not left stranded altogether.
