Hayes Morrison, Maria Carpenter to replace Transportation Director Michael Lambert and Library Director Nancy Milnor

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone announced this week that, following the recent departures of Transportation and Infrastructure Director Michael Lambert and Library Director Nancy Milnor, the City has extended offers to two new Directors in those departments, which were ultimately accepted.  Lambert, who recently accepted a position with the MBTA will be replaced by Hayes Morrison, while Milnor will be replaced by Maria Carpenter following her retirement this month.

Ms. Morrison will come to the City after a four year tenure as the Transportation Finance Manager with the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization, of which Somerville is a member.  With the MPO, Ms. Morrison managed more than $3 billion of federal and state funds for roadway and transit projects, and was responsible for developing and implementing project criteria to prioritize development projects in the Boston area.  She had previously held positions as a Senior Transportation Planner in Rockport, Illinois and a Transportation Planner in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Ms. Carpenter, a Somerville resident with 12 years of experience in public and academic libraries, will join the City after serving as the Director of Library Advancement at Northeastern University.  Responsible for overseeing a $10.5 million budget, she spearheaded the libraries’ strategic assessment planning process, and brings a focus on organizational learning and development as well as a marketing and communications background to the Somerville community.

“I’m honored and excited to announce these two new Directors for the City.  Regionally, these women are among the best in their field, and we are fortunate that they will be joining our team in the coming weeks,” said Mayor Curtatone.  “Other communities in the area have had to make cuts to library funding and halt development projects. In Somerville we are not only moving full steam ahead with our  transportation initiatives and increasing hours in our public libraries, but under the direction of Hayes and Maria, I know that each of these departments will have much more to offer to the Somerville community as we move forward.”

“Over the last several years, thanks to the leadership of Mike Lambert and Nancy Milnor, we have made great strides in our transit-oriented projects, and within our public libraries, and I am extremely grateful for their hard work and achievements during their time with the City,” Mayor Curtatone added.  “We are losing some great colleagues and friends, but I wish them both the best with their respective next steps.”

Morrison and Carpenter will begin their work with the City on August 22nd and September 6th, respectively.
