In the first game of the MiddleEssex softball season against Winthrop the Somerville Storm lost 5-15 against a good Winthrop team. They managed only 3 hits, one each by Charolette Schofield, Amolee Hawkins and Diedra Matthews. After starting strong and leading 5-3 after 2 innings, and in spite allowing only four hits to Winthrop, the walks took their toll in the 3rd and 4th innings.
The Storm begins the year with 4 new players on their roster including first year players Emily O’Regan, Emily Liberato, Marissa Toner, as well as Charolette Schofield, who is new to the roster from last year.
Returning players from last year’s team that posted a 4-7-3 record include Brianna Dell’Isola, Brenna Foristall, Amanda Grace, Amolee Hawkins, Diedra Matthews, Kayla O’Regan, Jen Toner, Emily Woodman, and Andrea Rao (currently out with an injury).
The Storm bounced back on Thursday night in Westford with a 14-12 victory. Five different pitchers took the mound for the Storm, anchored with seven K’s, 2 runs and 2 hits in 2 2/3 innings by Amolee Hawkins and two scoreless innings by Jen Toner.
The top of the lineup, which included Amanda Grace, Charloette Schofield, Amolee Hawkins, Brianna Dell’lsola, and Kayla O’Regan, was a combined 12/16 at the plate scoring 12 runs. Outstanding performances by first year players included an inning of pitching by Emily Liberato who gave up only one run and one hit. Emily O’Regan was 1 for 2 at the play with a hit, walk, and 2 runs scored.
The Storm are back on the diamond this week with a game against Belmont on Tuesday and back home at Trum to face Woburn on Wednesday.
