Longtime firebrand and friend to The Somerville News Susan Fontano was recognized for her four-year tenure as President of East Somerville Main Streets. Joined at the podium by Aldermen Bill Roche and Dennis Sullivan, as well as a throng of admirers, Fontano was elated as she received her citation for her tireless work.

Roche was quick to note her accolades, including chair of the Zoning Board of Appeals, calling her the “unsung hero of Ward 1.”

Sullivan was likewise pleased. “Sue’s energy and passion has helped East Somerville Main Streets as a primary neighborhood organization in East Somerville,” he said. “The entire membership extends its gratitude.”

“This is really thrilling,” said Fontano. “I really love getting involved there and I love my city.”

“I love East Somerville, I love my neighborhood, I want to be proud of it. I love the people,” she said. “It must something in our water because Somerville people are the best.”

They also requested a $13 million grant from the state through the Library Board of Trustees, contingent upon the appropriation of matching funds.
