Race includes children’s “Fun Run,” adult race & walk; Participants invited to join SomerStreets celebration following the race
The City’s annual Shape Up Somerville / Somerville Recreation Road Race, which had previously been scheduled for April 10 has been rescheduled for Sunday, June 5, as part of the City’s first SomerStreets event of the year. Now being held on a different race course, the children’s “Fun Run” will kick off at 11:00 a.m., with a race around Foss Park. At 12:00 (noon) the adult walk/run will begin from Foss Park, and continue to School Street, Highland Ave., Central Street, Summer Street, Walnut Street, Gilman Street, and Cross Street, ending at SomerStreets on East Broadway (for a map of the race course click here.)
Registration is open to all community members at a price of $5 for youth under age 10 and $20 for adults. Price includes a commemorative t-shirt, water and a banana at the finish line.
Top male and female finishers in each category will receive awards. Registration forms can be downloaded here, or picked up at the Welcome Desk at City Hall or at the Recreation Building at 19 Walnut Street. Checks should be made payable to Somerville Youth and Recreation Foundation, and can be mailed or delivered to Somerville Recreation, 19 Walnut Street, Somerville, MA 02143. Following the race, all participants are invited to join in the “Carnaval at SomerStreets,” a celebration on East Broadway which will include live music, a parade, a Farmers Market, programming, and much more along the entire stretch of roadway, which will be closed to vehicular traffic. SomerStreets is the City of Somerville’s Open Streets Initiative, which closes sections of roadway during one Sunday each month throughout the summer to promote walking, biking, and other forms of physical activity. The June 5 event is cosponsored by the City, East Somerville Main Streets, and FossFest.
