Q: If my income is below the filing threshold, do I really need to file a tax return?
A: Even though you may not be required to file, doing so could result in a refund!
Many taxpayers who aren’t required to file still qualify for money back through:
Refundable tax credits (like the Earned Income Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit).
A refund of federal income tax withheld from your paycheck.
State tax refunds that may not be obvious without filing.
For 2024 tax returns, you generally must file if your income was at least:
• $14,600 (Single)
• $29,200 (Married filing jointly)
• $21,900 (Head of household)
• $5 (Married filing separately)
Bottom Line: Even if your income is below these amounts, filing a return could still get you a refund—you might be owed hundreds or even thousands of dollars!
