Entrepreneur and Community Advocate Calls for Bold, Action-Oriented Leadership
Jason Mackey has officially launched his campaign for Mayor of Somerville, pledging to bring decisive leadership, innovative solutions, and a results-driven approach to city government.
“Somerville deserves leadership that delivers — not just talks,” said Mackey. “For too long, critical issues like housing affordability, transportation, and public safety have been met with half measures and delays. I’m running to change that. This city needs a mayor who will tackle problems head-on and get things done.”
A Vision for a Stronger Somerville
Mackey’s campaign is built on pragmatic, people-first solutions, including:
• Ending Homelessness for Good – Implementing a housing-first approach modeled after successful programs in Helsinki and Houston, prioritizing permanent supportive housing and reducing bureaucratic barriers.
• Protecting Somerville’s Sanctuary City Status – Ensuring all residents are treated with dignity and standing firm against unconstitutional federal overreach.
• Addressing Housing Affordability – Expanding affordable and middle-income housing through zoning reforms, responsible development, and strengthened tenant protections.
• Empowering Small Businesses – Cutting red tape, expanding micro-loans, and launching a city-wide business accelerator to support local entrepreneurs.
• Fixing City Hall – Streamlining permitting, modernizing city services, and eliminating inefficiencies to make government more responsive.
• Enhancing Public Safety – Fully staffing police and mental health services, strengthening community policing, and taking a proactive approach to crime prevention.
• Championing Diversity & Equity – Ensuring every resident has a voice in government and fostering inclusive policies that promote fairness and representation.
A Track Record of Problem-Solving
Mackey, a longtime advocate for equity and inclusion, understands the importance of leadership that reflects the diversity of its people. As a Black gay man, he has worked to break down barriers
and create opportunities—values he’ll bring to the Mayor’s Office to ensure Somerville remains a city where everyone has the chance to thrive.
“The City Council isn’t a training ground for mayor,” Mackey stated. “Somerville can’t afford on-the job learning. We need leadership that knows how to cut through red tape and make real progress.”
On transportation, Mackey pledged practical, balanced solutions that prioritize year-round infrastructure repairs, safer roads and sidewalks, and rational parking policies that work for
residents, businesses, and commuters.
With a growing coalition of supporters, Mackey is inviting Somerville residents to join the movement.
“This isn’t just my campaign, it’s our campaign,” said Mackey. “If you’re ready for real leadership and real solutions, let’s make it happen together.”

I’m detecting an alarming lack of interest in the dire, and soon to be very expensive, schools situation in Somerville. “Cutting red tape” doesn’t even begin to address this.
