Remember to vote in today’s Presidential Election

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Look up your polling place before you head out. You can still vote in person if you’ve applied to vote by mail.

If you’re voting by mail, you can hand-deliver your ballot to the Elections office at City Hall (93 Highland Ave.) by 8 p.m. or return it to a drop box before 6 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5. Ballots returned by mail must be received by the Elections Department, not just mailed or postmarked, by 8 p.m. on November 5. Check the status of your vote-by-mail ballot on the State’s website.

City of Somerville Ballot Question

Increasing CPA Surcharge 
The Somerville ballot question proposes increasing the Community Preservation Act (CPA) surcharge from its current rate to 3%. This surcharge funds projects related to affordable housing, historic preservation, open space, and recreation.

Statewide Ballot Questions

Auditor’s Authority to Audit the Legislature
This proposed law would specify that the State Auditor has the authority to audit the Legislature. 

Elimination of MCAS as a High School Graduation Requirement
This proposed law would eliminate the requirement that a student pass the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) tests (or other statewide or district-wide assessments) in order to receive a high school diploma. Instead, the proposed law would require the student to complete coursework certified by the student’s district as demonstrating mastery of the competencies contained in the state academic standards.

Unionization for Transportation Network Drivers
This proposed law would provide Transportation Network Drivers (“Drivers”) with the right to form unions (“Driver Organizations”) to collectively bargain with Transportation Network Companies (“Companies”)—to create negotiated recommendations concerning wages, benefits and terms and conditions of work.

Limited Legalization of Certain Natural Psychedelic Substances
This proposed law would allow persons aged 21 and older to grow, possess, and use certain natural psychedelic substances in certain circumstances. The psychedelic substances allowed would be two substances found in mushrooms (psilocybin and psilocyn) and three substances found in plants (dimethyltryptamine, mescaline, and ibogaine).

Minimum Wage for Tipped Workers
This proposed law would gradually increase the minimum hourly wage an employer must pay a tipped worker, over the course of five years.
