The Massachusetts general election is Tuesday, November 5. This election will determine the offices of U.S. President and Vice President, U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative, Governor’s Councillor, State Senator, State Representative, Register of Deeds, and Clerk of Courts. Somerville residents can vote by mail, vote early, or vote on election day.

Register to Vote by October 26

Register to vote one of three ways: online at somervillema.gov/registertovote, in person at City Hall (93 Highland Ave.), or by calling the Elections Department (617-625-6600 ext. 4200) and requesting a voter registration form. The in person registration deadline is Saturday, October 26 by 5 p.m. or online by midnight. Your registration can also be mailed and will be accepted with a postmark of October 26th or earlier. 

Vote Early at City Hall, October 19-November 1

Vote early at City Hall from Saturday, October 19, through Friday, November 1. Voting hours are as follows:

  • Saturdays and Sundays: 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. ( October 26 9:00 am. to 5:00 p.m.)
  • Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays: 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
  • Thursdays: 8:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m.
  • Fridays: 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Vote by Mail

  • Applications to vote by mail must be received by 5 p.m., Tuesday, October 29:

Applications to vote by mail must be received (not postmarked) by the Somerville Elections Department by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, October 29. Download an application from somervillema.gov/votebymail, pick one up in the Elections office at City Hall, apply online at voteinma.com, or request one be mailed to you by calling Elections at 617-625-6600 ext. 4200. 

  • Ballots must be received by the Election Department by 8pm on Election Day or be postmarked as November 5th and received by mail on or before November 8th. 

Eligible voters who submit valid applications will receive their ballot in the mail. Ballots must be completed, signed, sealed, and received by the City. Voters can check the status of their ballot on the state’s website.

  • How to return your application and ballot:
    • Drop boxes: Leave it in a drop box at one of the following locations: (All drop boxes aside from the City Hall box will be locked at 6pm on Tuesday November 5th)
    • Elections office: Return directly to the Elections Department at City Hall
    • Mail: Send to the Elections Department, 93 Highland Ave., Somerville, MA 02143 
    • Email or fax (for applications only): Completed applications can be emailed to vote@somervillema.gov or faxed to 617-625-5643. Ballots cannot be returned by email or fax.

VOTE BY MAIL BALLOTS CAN NOT BE ACCEPTED AT THE POLLS ON ELECTION DAY

 All ballots that are received between November 5 at 4 p.m. and November 8 at 5 p.m. will be counted at a post election tabulation that will be held at City Hall on Thursday, November 14.

    It is very unclear if I should have received my mail in ballot by now. It seems like I should have. When do they send the ballots out once the application to vote by mail has been accepted?
