Femino to retire this fall
On behalf of the City of Somerville, Mayor Katjana Ballantyne is extending her deepest gratitude to interim Police Chief Charles Femino for his exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication to the Somerville Police Department.
Chief Femino, who stepped into the role of Acting Police Chief during the height of the pandemic in December 2020, has guided the department through one of the most challenging periods in recent history, leaving a lasting impact on both the department and the community.
“We will always be deeply grateful for Chief Femino’s service and dedication to Somerville,” said Mayor Ballantyne. “His legacy of leadership and commitment to justice will continue to inspire our work as we move forward. We are deeply grateful for his deft ability to steer the department through unprecedented challenges while continuing to improve operations, enhance public safety, and advance our goals for community-focused policing. His tenure has been nothing short of remarkable.”
Chief Femino’s career in law enforcement spans over three decades, beginning with his distinguished service in the Somerville Police Department from 1984 to 2014. During his tenure, he served in several key roles, including Chief of Detectives for over 15 years, Deputy Chief, and Acting Chief from 2013 to 2014. After his initial retirement from the Somerville Police Department, Chief Femino continued his public service as the Chief of Police for Endicott College before returning to Somerville to serve as Acting Chief for over three years, allowing the City to recruit a successor to continue his important work in Somerville.
A highly respected figure within the department and beyond, Chief Femino holds a Juris Doctor from the New England School of Law, a Master’s in Education from Boston University, and a Bachelor’s in Criminal Science from Northeastern University. His academic achievements, coupled with his extensive experience, have made him a formidable leader and an invaluable asset to the Somerville Police Department.
