Newstalk – March 9

On March 9, 2011, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

This Friday night at the Armory is the hopefully new Annual St. Patrick’s Day Party,  hosted by Ward 5 Alderman Sean O’Donovan. The band for the evening is “Old Brigade Irish Band”, tickets $20 at the door starting at 7 p.m. running to 11 p.m.,   We hear that former State Representative Marie Howe who hosted these annual celebrations back in the 70’s and 80’s will also be present. Should be a lot of fun and a great evening for everyone, wear something green and bring your dance shoes. Irish or not everyone is Irish for St. Patrick’s Day.

Was that the director of Somerville Community Corporation, Dan LeBlanc at the recent demonstration at the KSS development last week? Seems kind of funny that a guy representing a nonprofit organization such as the Somerville Community Corporation who is also essentially a developer who has built properly hundreds of housing developments here in the city, most recently Temple and Jacques and St. Polycarp’s Village, would be there. We heard  that the Somerville Community Corporation rarely uses union shops or local businesses to build here in the city and by the way, how do the Aldermen let him get away with that? This guy gets paid we hear over $150K a year, a nonprofit status, they get their money from grants and he is there picketing against another developer for doing the same thing his organization does. Guess he believes in the old adage “do as I say, not as I do”, hmmm, wonder what his bosses the board of directors say about this or is this another local non-profit that the director hand picks their own  board members.

So far we hear two opponents running against alderman Bob Trane, also rumor has it that  the present School Committee member in that ward might decide to run for the  seat.  Three women against an incumbent male alderman, should be very interesting. We hear that many are saying he’s in trouble and just might end up losing. We know that Joan Puglia has gathered together some seasoned political minds here in the city so it should be interesting.

Meanwhile down in Ward 4, incumbent Walter Pero has his two opponents Tony Lafuente and Christine Barber, all three live in the same precint. Some are saying Walter could be in trouble but he does have a solid base in the Winter Hill area and he is and incumbent. We also hear that Tony will wage an energetic campaign against Walter; Tony is also well known and has a base. Then there is Ms. Barber whom we hear was put in the race by the local Progressive Democrats in particular Christine Rafel the school committee member from ward 4.

Remember to go online and help get Det. Mario Olivieria to win the contest by the John Walsh “America Most Wanted”, we need to go online to their website and vote daily for Mario, hopefully he will win. Go online to www.AMW.com and click on All Star Award and vote for Mario Oliveira.  You can and are allowed to vote once a day every day for about six weeks, the winner (hopfully Mario) will receive a check for $10,000 and a trip to a NASCAR race in North Carolina.  Det. Mario is coming along just great from his injuries this past November when he was shot point blank in the chest several times, they don’t call him Super Mario for nothing, a great guy and this will help his family.

Condolences to the family of Ed Lynch formerly of Somerville, Ed was the Somerville Lions Club President from 1988 to 1989.  He was also the founder of Wayside Trucking Company that used to be on Somerville Avenue way back when Somerville had a bunch of trucking companies, Ed was a very nice guy and will be missed by many, especially at the club where he was a huge supporter of everything.

Congratulations to Somerville High School Student Sean Post, who has recently applied for an assignment with the AmeriCorps once he graduates from SHS in May. Sean is still awaiting acceptance but stands a great chance to get in. Unfortunately the US House of Representatives has passed legislation that will end all funding of this great program (Think Peace Corp but only in US). The bill (H.R. 1) is now in the Senate.   Many are hoping that supporters would consider signing the petition on charge.org to save AmeriCorps or simply log into www.change.org/petitions/save-americorp. to check it out, we hear at News talk wish Sean all the best!

Please join in on a fund-raiser to benefit Somerville’s own Tom and Lauren Powers.  As most of you might know, Tom had a very serious accident and is in MGH.    He will endure many surgeries and many, many months of rehab.   This has taken a mental, physical and financial toll on Tom and Lauren.   They have a long struggle ahead of them. On March 23 all you have to do is eat at Applebee’s at 95 Middlesex St. in Malden  and tell your server that you are Dining to Donate for Tom Powers.  Applebee’s will donate 20 percent of your food bill to Tom Powers.
