Somerville’s Mayor Katjana Ballantyne, the Somerville Commission for Women, Somernova, and the city’s Department of Racial and Social Justice hosted a Women’s History Month celebration on March 27 at Somervova.

The event featured keynote speaker Adrienne Smith who is a wide receiver for the Boston Renegades and the founder of Gridiron Queendom, an organization dedicated to creating more opportunities in football and professional sports for women and girls.

“It is so important that we gather as a community to celebrate the remarkable contributions and achievements of women who have shaped our community and beyond,” said Mayor Ballantyne. “As only the second female mayor in Somerville’s long history, I look forward to honoring the work of the women who have paved the way forward and hope our celebration will inspire our community to continue breaking barriers and never accept their gender identity as a roadblock to achieving their goals.”

This year’s celebration featured keynote speakers, music from DJ L’Duke, and interactive games with prizes. Food and drink were also provided during the event.

“In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Somerville Commission for Women hopes this event allows all of us to take a moment to reflect on our commitment to support women’s empowerment, uplift the women in our lives, celebrate our progress, and continue to build a community of equality and love,” shared the Somerville Commission for Women.
