Dear Editor:

The article “Another Jew for Ceasefire,” by Christopher Spicer (Somerville Times, March 20) presented a very confused message about what the 35 protesters in Davis Square were actually calling for. One need not be a specialist in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to understand the meaning of the sign that was portrayed in a very positive way by Spicer.  The sign said “Generation after Generation Until Total Liberation.”  The demand for “total liberation” is a very clear, unambiguous call for the destruction of the state of Israel.

The article also refers, in an approving manner, to the chant “No Peace on Stolen land”. But again, this is nothing less than a declaration of permanent war against Israel until all of the “stolen land” is captured. And in the eyes of those who support chants like this, it is crystal clear that they see all of pre-1967 Israel as “stolen land.”

No doubt, some of the people at this protest were genuinely calling for a ceasefire in the current war in Gaza. At the same time, there is no doubt that others were openly calling for continuous war until Israel is destroyed.
