Today is the last day to view the exhibit, Museo Inmigrante at the Somerville Museum. Admission is $5, free for Museum members (memberships start at $25), and free for children 12 and under. The Museum is in the heart of Somerville on Central Street and Westwood Road, where it has stood for 100 years.
Museo Inmigrate: Stories of Resilience from Somerville’s Padres Latinos was curated by Marta Fuertes and Ivan Abarca-Torres. Padres Latinos is a mutual aid group of more than 230 Spanish and Portuguese-speaking parents with children in the Somerville Public Schools (SPS). For this exhibit, Padres Latinos partnered with award-winning photographers Mario Quiroz and Iaritza Menjivar to explore stories from its members about immigration, home, family, memory, community, and finding purpose.
The exhibition had a beautiful review written by Suzanne Révy on the photography site What Will You Remember and has been featured in Telemundo, El Planeta, El Mundo Boston, and The Brazilian Times as well as an item by Pulitzer Prize-winning art critic Mark Feeney in The Boston Globe and a virtual tour on the Mass Humanities website. Just this week, Channel 5 (Boston ABC affiliate WCVB) produced a seven minute piece about the show.
Exhibition photographer Iaritza Menjivar has been featured in The New York Times Lens Blog and her clients include The Washington Post. Originally from El Salvador, photographer Mario Quiroz has been exhibiting across New England for the last 14 years.
When Museum visitors asked if they could make a donation to support Padres Latinos, All Court Enrichment (ACE) camp, was the organization Padres Latinos selected. With your donations, you can help send 50 Somerville children from Padres Latinos to a wonderful summer camp in Foss Park. At All Court Enrichment (ACE) camp, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, children will focus on their writing skills as well as learning tennis with Coach Drew Hendrickson.
