Life in the Ville by Jimmy Del Ponte

The small aluminum diner is at 113 Washington St. A deceased friend of mine lived next door and we met there for good eats. It was built in 1930 and is on the Somerville historical register. If you sit at the counter the seats are kind of low but work out well for me and my short legs! The decor is very vintage looking and welcoming. I asked my social media friends to share their comments about Buddy’s diner.

“Absolutely, it’s my favorite breakfast place of all time. I had breakfast there the morning of the blizzard of 78, I have been going there since around 1975.”

“Best corned beef hash!”

“My husband went there a lot. He worked across at the railroad.”

“It’s been there a long time. I used to go there as a kid. I’m 71.”

“Should be a national landmark.”

“Love it. Do they still display their menu items on hanging paper plates?” (yes!)

“Glad to see all these comments on how great the place is. My 2023 resolution is to try two new restaurants each month, Buddy’s is on the list.”

“Been going there since 1972 when it was run by John, his dad and brother. But shortly after John sold my eating habits changed. A really young lady bought it. Do they still offer the same menu and great burger?”

“Yes, had breakfast there last week.”

“My Dad used to take me there when I would go out to plow snow with him. Good memories! Nice people there.”

I can personally recommend the Eggs Benedict.

The quaint little diner is definitely one of Somerville’s gems. I don’t know the plans but it has been closed for a few months.
