Life in the Ville by Jimmy Del Ponte
Saturday, 6:00 p.m. Here we are expecting our first significant snowstorm in two years and everybody’s parked on the even side of the street. I don’t know where people find parking spaces during snow emergencies but they do. Too bad they have the old Star Market on Broadway all fenced in because that would’ve been a good place to park during the storm.
Right now it’s 6:00 o’clock Saturday evening and we’re waiting for the first flakes to fall. Let’s see how we do with the first real snow storm we’ve had in a couple of years.
I know the stores were pretty crowded yesterday from what I heard. Of course, we had to hear the regular amount of hype on TV. Every channel a bit different.
Saturday, 8:30, 36°: There are still a few cars parked on the web side. No flakes yet.
12:30 a.m.: Seems like light rain, everything is wet. No flakes yet.
1:30 a.m.: Lots of wet flakes are now falling.
2:09 a.m.: Here it comes. It’s falling heavily and sticking. It’s coming down pretty good now.
3:00 a.m., 35°: And it’s really coming down. No plow action yet.
5:00 a.m.: Absolutely not one bit of precipitation at this time. The small amount of snow on the street appears to have been plowed. You can see black.
5:35 a.m.: Still no flakes.
6:00 a.m.: Sleet.
6:00 a.m.: Back to snow again.
7:30 a.m.: Snowing like crazy. Wet snow.
By 10:00 a.m. it’s back to light snow.
“I wonder where everyone parked. This Somerville Facebook friend posted this:
“I think if you’re parked on a residential street during a snow emergency and take up two spots, you should be towed. It’s rude, inconsiderate, and ignorant. There are two cars on my street that are both taking up two spots and it’s on the side for the snow emergency. It’s just very rude considering how awful parking is already.”
My weather app on my cell phone says it’s supposed to stop around 8:00 p.m. We’ll see.
Did this storm constitute a snow emergency?
It finally stopped by 4:00 p.m.
And there you have it. By Monday it was very icy. Hopefully the sun will loosen some of it up. We all survived the big snowstorm.
Wednesday is supposed to be in the 50s. Can’t wait.
