The hearing for the vacant Star Market on Winter Hill is not going to be this week, the owner and the Ocean State Job Lot people have asked the planning board to postpone it until August 5 at City Hall at 6p.m. Ward 4 Alderman Walter Pero has asked everyone to be notified of the change. The meeting between the neighborhood and the owners and job lot didn’t go properly as planned; let’s hope they at least spell Somerville correctly this time in their presentation to the Planning Board. We bet this time the Attorney for the owner will remind us at least 12 times in his presentation he’s from Brookline and the owner is from Newton. By the way Alderman Pero asks all those interested to keep sending him your comments by calling him at 617-628-0137.

Senator Pat Jehlen’s November opponent is quietly out there knocking on doors and, to our amazement, many people don’t even know who she is. Some actually think Sen. Charlie Shannon is still representing us. Tells you a lot when the State Senator isn’t even known in her own district. Candidate Dave Carnevale, her opponent, will be the Republican candidate on the ballot and he is out there working quietly every single day. You can read about him at his web site www.davecarnevale.com and, oh yes, Sen. Jehlen has denounced him as one of those radical Tea Party people, imagine that! Again, Sen. Jehlen is practicing Beacon Hill tactics at its very worst.

Hard to believe but this year marks the 30th Anniversary of the Senior Picnic at Powerhouse Park. Since it’s the 30th anniversary of this great event the city will be honoring former Mayor Gene Brune who started this back 30years ago in 1980. Hard to believe it started over 30 years ago, Mayor Gene Brune at the time probably didn’t realize it would be one of Somerville’s finest times and a yearly event. This year Mayor Joe and his staff will honor Mayor Gene with a giant video screen of past picnics. A lot of prizes and great time headed up by the Council on Aging. Join the Mayor along with Former Mayor Gene and celebrating this event, Wednesday August 11 10a.m. to 2p.m. at Powderhouse Park. Call Council on Aging for reservations at 617 625-6600.

This past weekend’s flood was disastrous for the city with the tunnel at McGrath and especially at the Public Safety building where cruisers and equipment were flooded. Thanks to the help of many here and especially at the DPW and of course both the Fire and Police Department, things will be back in order very shortly. Mayor Joe and his DPW commissioner Stan Koty did a wonderful job to get things rolling and not missing a beat as far as 911 calls.

Can you spot the new Web site and when it’s up and running? This week we thank our own Jim Clark, who is not only the cartoonist but literally the right hand of Bobbie and George and the rest of us over at the News. Thanks to him, we have a new site going up, easier to blog like the old one too. And, by the way, since we posted from Typepad to Facebook the paper every day, we increased to 4,700 face book fans and hits on the site have consistently been over 1,400 a day because of it. Thank you Jim.

Also note that the Somerville News will be moving next week to Ball Square to consolidate and save money in these tough economic times. But not to worry, the 400 plus papers that Davis Square residents take in front of the office will still be there and available to them, thanks to the insurance office.
