As a city that has historically embraced peoples and cultures from all over the world, Somerville is no less welcoming of the Hispanic community in all its varied and vibrant forms.

As such, Mayor Katjana Ballantyne, the city’s SomerViva: Office of Immigrant Affairs, Department of Racial and Social Justice, and the Somerville Arts Council (SAC) are currently busy celebrating National Hispanic Heritage month, now through October 15.

A number of special events are scheduled throughout the course of the celebration, including:

Hispanic Heritage Celebration, Saturday, October 14, 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the East Somerville Community School. Hosted by the city’s SomerViva: Office of Immigrant Affairs and the Department of Racial and Social Justice, the event was coordinated by a working group of community volunteers who interviewed residents to ask how they wished to celebrate their heritage.

The celebration will showcase “country stations,” where attendees can learn about Latin American and Caribbean countries including sampling foods and viewing traditional clothing.

Other events include activities at Somerville High School (SHS) LatinX Student Union, the Las Chicas Artistas all-Spanish-language exhibition at the Somerville Arts Council’s BIPOC pop-up exhibition space, 191 Highland Ave., Suite 2A and don’t miss the Artistas de Somerville exhibit at The Inside Out Gallery at the CVS window in Davis Square.
