Mayor Katjana Ballantyne, Ward 5 City Councilor Beatriz Gomez Mouakad, and the city’s Division of Public Space and Urban Forestry invite you to a virtual community meeting to learn about upcoming construction to improve and expand Somerville Junction Park.

Somerville Junction Park is an important neighborhood asset and a key resting place along the Community Path. The redesign will increase the park’s total area from 0.6 acres to 1.43 acres by eliminating 0.83 acres of asphalt, while also adding gathering spaces with picnic tables and a variety of seating options, hammock posts, bike racks and a repair station, among other amenities.

The updated park will also feature new trees and native pollinator plantings to help cool the air and increase biodiversity. Construction will begin in mid-August and is expected to continue through December 2024.

The virtual meeting will take place on Monday, August 14, at 6:00 p.m. At this meeting, City staff will review the final design, outline the construction process and timeline, and answer questions. To learn more and register to attend the meeting, go to somervillema.gov/junctionpark.

Later in the week, Mayor Ballantyne, Councilor Gomez Mouakad, and city staff invite you to a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the beginning of construction. The event will take place on the park site at 114 Central St. on Wednesday, August 16, from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. (rain date: Friday, August 18, from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.).
