It was sure fun while it lasted. Not that it’s gone forever, but a temporary suspension of service will put a temporary end to the Green Line Extension service between Lechmere and Union Square Stations that we have come to love and, in some cases, depend on.

According to the MBTA, the suspension is necessary in order to make repairs on the Squire Bridge, which crosses over tracks near Union Square Station. Of course, alternative travel options have been set up involving a combination of bus lines and other connecting branch lines.

We get it, though. Ensuring passenger safety and efficiency of the system is of paramount importance. We have already witnessed a number of near disastrous breakdowns and annoying closures throughout the system in recent months. It is far better to play it safe now than to find ourselves sorry later.

But if it isn’t tough enough already, add into the mix the full Sumner Tunnel closure taking place through the end of August, and then on weekends on into November in order to complete planned renovations.

And to top it off, there are further intermittent repair closures scheduled for the Red, Orange, Kingston, Middleborough, Greenbush, and Worcester lines in the weeks and months to come.

Again, we appreciate the need for maintenance of our light rail system. But with a measured sigh of tempered exasperation.
