On Thursday evening, June 8, the Somerville Museum hosted an opening reception for its exhibit, Phil Reavis: Above and Beyond. As an athlete, Reavis went from setting high jump records as a Somerville High School student to representing the U.S. in the Olympics. Former Boston Globe executive sports editor Jerry Nason wrote, “Phil is the greatest jumper (personal height vs. height of bar) America has ever produced.”

Both Phil Reavis and his son Phil Reavis, Jr., spoke at the exhibit’s opening event. The younger Reavis said that his father’s career showed the importance of “being open to possibilities, and taking advantage of opportunities.” Reavis himself told how the recreation leader at his local playground encouraged him to try the high jump, and helped him develop his technique. Reavis stated, “I became what I am because of what Somerville was.”

Reavis, in turn, has been dedicated to nurturing the talents of others. He coached Vietnam’s 1964 Olympic track and field team, then spent over 20 years working as a teacher and coach. A world traveler, Reavis currently lives abroad, and has had a third career as a jazz musician. He has also published a book of poetry.

A big crowd was present on Thursday evening to honor Reavis, a man of remarkable modesty. All applauded the efforts of the students of the Local History Club at Somerville High School, who curated the exhibit, and their award-winning teacher, Adda Santos. The Somerville High School’s athletic field, still under construction, will be named the Philip Reavis, Sr. Field.

This exhibit is open until Saturday, July 8. See it during Somerville Museum open hours: Thursdays, 2:00 – 7:00 p.m.; Fridays, 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.; Saturdays, 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. Check the Somerville Museum website, https://www.somervillemuseum.org for special events connected to the exhibit, such as its Juneteenth Special Open Hours, on Monday, June 19, starting at noon, with a poetry reading by Phil Reavis from 1:00 to 1:30 p.m., followed by student poetry slam. Space is limited, tickets can be purchased in advance.

The Reavis exhibit illuminates the many aspects of a life driven by curiosity and a willingness to try new things.
