Food For Free recently received a brand new 22′ refrigerated Isuzu box truck to add to the nonprofit’s fleet. The truck will augment Food For Free’s overall food transportation capacity by up to 27,000 lbs. (the equivalent of 22,500 meals) per day, and increase the organization’s engagement with Greater Boston Food Bank transportation partners (smaller agencies without their own vehicles) by over 50 percent. Since the vehicle is equipped with a liftgate, Food For Free can serve partners with or without loading docks, and it is just the right size to access certain locations that larger trucks cannot.
On Thursday, May 4, a celebration was held at Food For Free’s Packing and Distribution Center in Somerville that included remarks from Ben Engle of Food For Free and Geeta Pradhan of Cambridge Community Foundation.
The 22′ refrigerated Isuzu box truck purchase was made possible by a grant from the Cambridge Community Foundation (CCF) thanks to a Massachusetts CDBG CV (CARES ACT) Food Insecurity Grant – a partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD). Food For Free’s collaboration with CCF will allow Food For Free to serve more partners in Cambridge, Somerville, and Medford as they expand their engagement in the shared fight against food insecurity in the surrounding communities.
